Instrumentation and Control

Infrastructure:-

Pioneering in the field of Instrumentation & Control in Saurashtra University, this department has grown up a long way. This department is unique in the Saurashtra University not only by means of Syllabus, but also in the sense of Industrial relations & support, vast use of various teaching aids, staff student interaction, rich library & e-library utilization, and laboratory infrastructure also.

In the sense of curriculum of Branch, it is the proper combinations of subjects, which not only leads students to industrial aspect but also gives an edge to learn subjects that can be useful for their future studies as well as advance developments in the field of Instrumentation & Control. The entire syllabus is such nicely designed to give students sufficient depth. Syllabus of Inst & Control steam includes subjects like Robotics, Artificial Intelligence & Expert systems, neural networks & Fuzzy Logic, Biomedical Instrumentation, Digital Signal Processing, Embedded Systems, System Design, Industrial Automation etc.

To give nice practical approach to the field of instrumentation & control, department is currently having five state of art laboratories which are quite rich not in the sense of instruments but also in the sense of experiments also. All the labs are having sufficient amount of Charts and other supportive teaching aids. Department has also prepared the Lab Books for the subject “Control System”. The process of preparing Lab Books is also going in the full flange. One of the Asset of the Department is the ROBOTICS Kit, which costs around 0.1 million. We proudly say that non other than this department of University has this kind of Robotics Kit. The kit has inbuilt features like, assembling and dissembling of robot kit in whatever manner we wish. Total investment of college after the various advance instruments of laboratories is around 1.3 Millions of Rupees.

The department is having vast sets of teaching aids like transparencies, charts, multimedia media presentations, and simulators, tutors that are used to make students learn the subjects in lucid manner. There is huge collection of Textbooks, Reference books, magazines, journals of various subjects in main library, which supports and encourages students as well as faculties in a great and easy manner. Department is also having vast collection of various text and reference books in the Departmental Library. It also has the various magazines and journals.

Department is having great encouraging and warm support of industries and medical hospitals in various aspects, related to syllabus designing, student and staff training and other technical support. KRIBHCO and GNFC has also donated instruments and control system components to the department.

Main strength of any department is better close neat of Staff and between Staff and Students. Department is having the enthusiastic and dedicated work force. All the staff members are working with that much of enthusiasm that any task or any work is the opportunity for them to work. There is no bar of levels within the staff members. Department is also having good relations with other department also.

Department is organizing events like ‘Tech View’ to give the junior students the view about the future aspects of Instrumentation & Control field.

Laboratries:-

Department has Five laboratories with state of art facilities. First lab named Advanced Instrumentation lab is the heart of department. We have as pride of dept. ROBIX RASCAL ROBOT Trainer kit on which students can make their own configuration of Robots, which takes them to the world of Robotics. This lab also has two Micro Controller Programmers, on which student can program their own microcontrollers for preparation of projects. This lab has advance microprocessor interfacing cards and 8051 microcontroller kits. Second lab is Measurement lab which has internationally standardized Dead Weight tester on which various gauges can be calibrated. We are proud to state that this instrument has also served for calibration of gauges of Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. Other than this lab has many real life parameter measuring instruments like temperature, pressure, level etc. We also have industrial electronics kits also with AC and DC Motors. Next lab is Control System lab. This lab has fundamental instruments of control system and various electronic measurements like, voltage, current, bridge, demonstrative CRO. This lab also has analytical instruments, pH measurement, conductivity measurement, switch capacitor networks etc. Control System Components lab has various cut sectional of valve and actuators, cam followers, solenoid valves and many more components & kits of control engineering. Last lab is Process control lab which has many kits like P, PI, PID controllers, DAS etc. We also have in this lab collection of various unused instruments donated by companies like KRIBHCO, GNFC.

Academic and personal counseling of students:-

Department is having strategy of minimum a counselor per division. Counselors take all care of students from their academic performance to personal problems. They work very hard for discipline among students. For students who are in need of personal attention, timing of lectures is such organized that they can meet faculties also after teaching hours. Regularly attendance of students is sent to their parents. Students’ parents are also remains in touch with department for progress report of their child.

Faculties of the department are currently taking more interest in development of Projects by students. Our one of the best project was presented at national level also named Miniature CNC machine which has gained reputation at industrial and media level also. Some of the projects undergone are related to process control, robotics, and controller based and even computerized control.

We are also emphasizing on presentation skills of student by seminars. Faculties try to improve students communication skills and body language. Students are also kept updated by giving them technical and non technical topics during seminar labs.

Modern teaching methods practiced:-

College has provided every department enough no of Over head projectors and Multi media projectors for the use of faculties. Dept has numerous amounts of color transparencies for use of faculties. So many times faculties also make their own transparencies for better understanding of students. Faculties also use PPT presentation for understanding of students.

For training faculties, how to use better teaching methods, collage has organized so many time faculty development program by any expert external agency like ACT. Training on body language and English is also given in this program. Even so many time departmental pedagogy sessions are also organized wherein every faculty teaches any new advanced topic of their era.

We are also emphasizing on presentation skills of student by seminars. Faculties try to improve students communication skills and body language. Students are also kept updated by giving them technical and non technical topics during seminar labs.

Future Plan:-

Saurashtra –Kutchh Region is one the fastest growing industrial sector of Gujarat state in both Small scale as well as large scale. Among these Small scale are in big volume. Taking this in consideration, we are planning to start consultancy in terms of assistance in building process loops, PLC programming, SCADA, CNC Programming etc. at very reasonable rates.

We are also planning to start a state of art training center for PLC, CNC and other automation systems.

Industrial Relations:-

Dept. regularly visit industries like GACL, KRIBHCO, TATA Chemicals, Jyoti CNC, Rotex Valves etc. for taking students to the real world of Instrumentation and Control and latest updates of field. We also visit near by Hospitals like B.T. Savani Kidney Hospital, Dhakan Hospital etc.

We also arrange training program on Automation in collaboration with Automation Control System, Pune every year. This course is certified by ISA chapter, Pune. This training gives students basic of PLC, its programming and other advance topics at very lower than actual fees for the course. So, the students are very much benefited.

Student Activities:-

Department is playing a vital role in placement of students. We normally take few lectures on interviews and preparation required for same. We sometime also conduct technical and non technical quiz and test. In subject of Seminar, we force students to prepare for aptitude, analytical, mathematical, verbal tests, to improve their communication skills, their body language.

We have formed one Yahoo Group for student’s communication and information sharing between not only students but also to their alumni friends. They can share placement papers, technical articles, non technical articles and world of information.

Library:-

Learning resources are available for staff and students at both levels, i.e. Departmental Library and Central Library. Dept. Library includes more than 120 titles of books. Library also has a massive collection of EFY magazines not only that we also have more than 40 CDs. Dept. library also have collection of Project reports and Seminar reports for reference of students.

Central Library is a mine of Gold for our students. Syllabus of IC is actually combination of EC, EE, CE Dept. Upto 2nd year students learn all most Non-core subjects of IC. Central Library includes more than 300 core Instrumentation and control engineering titles with more than 1000 volumes. For other Non-Core subjects other departments have plenty of books. Library has already subscribed 19 online IEL journals as well as two journals in print form. Other than this library has just subscribed for ASME journals, which are very much useful. E-library is also available for the students and staff both.

Computers:-

As library students have access of computers at both central computer center and departmental level also. Department has already spared one PC for the use of students for their project and seminar purpose. Computer is furnished with internet connectivity. Central computer center is state of art with more than 530 Dell computers, which all are having advanced configuration, like 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD etc. All computers are connected in LAN with internet connectivity. Students can access computer lab at any time. All students and staff have provided unique id and password, by use of which they can access any information available in world.

College has also developed an information system for the use of students for conduction of online test or online quiz. Students can avail information about lesson planning, assignments, lecture notes, papers presented etc information of their faculties from information server of institute. Department has created group of students named ‘ICONS’ on which students can discuss their problems, can pass any technical and non technical information, can avail previous years papers of any competitive exams.

Alumni:-

Our alumni students are also working with various companies like Gujarat Ambuja Cement, Gujarat Petronet, PGVCL, UGVCL, Sanghi Cement, Birla Copper, Alembic, Reliance Industries, Essar oil etc. Some of them are currently studying in abroad for their future studies in specific to US, UK, Australia etc.
